I am so glad to have the opportunity to share with you the impact Rob has had on my life. I first met him at a security training in which he and Michelle were conducting in Nairobi. I also had the additional pleasure of hosting them at my house for the duration of the training as they had not yet moved to Nairobi. I quickly realized Rob's sense of humor during the training as he bounced his wit off of the very serious matters of recognizing an unexploded device and escaping a mine field. And, wow, he could recognize and rattle off any kind of military weapon, splashing us with make and model and how many rounds per second. Whew, it was easy to feel his energy and get excited about the information that he was giving us that would prepare us for staying safe in unstable environments. And yet, this rough-tough soldier guy, when at my house, was as courteous and gracious gentleman as I have ever known (well he could still be loud even when gracious and courteous.) And the dinner he prepared for my wife and I was unbelieveable - it was a curry chicken that was fantastic. And more than just the flavor, he put his heart into making it. I could tell that he had fun with cooking, but the real joy to him came from serving his friends and sharing his creation. Countless times i have been asked about my year in Africa and every time i tell of the training I recieved. It has always been a badge of honor for me to say, "a major in the British Army taught me how to react to a grenade, and how to design a safe living compound." Yet way beyond the wows I get from the dramatic stories that relate to matters of safety, I have the more personal stories of playing basketball and just sitting in the front yard for hours of a perfect evening just sharing thoughts, quips, laughs and ideas.
